By the end of Term I students should be able to demonstrate the ability to:

  • Incorporate all previously-learned skills from level 3 Spanish
  • Identify and cite examples of the (8) major parts of speech in Spanish
  • Identify and utilize proper definite and indefinite articles
  • Use the “a” personal properly
  • Know how and when to use a subject pronoun when appropriate
  • Conjugate all verbs in the present/preterite/imperfect tenses
  • Compare and contrast the preterite and imperfect tenses and utilize them in the proper context
  • Narrate actions in the past in sequence
  • Set the scene, describe, and indicate feelings and opinions in the past
  • Shorten and position adjectives for appropriate use and meaning
  • Identify gender of nouns by key endings
  • Recognize and apply  reflexive verbs in context
  • Utilize direct object pronouns to communicate effectively and efficiently in the target language
  • Detail and a give a general overview on the origins of the Spanish language and its historical/cultural influences

By the end of Term II students should be able to demonstrate the ability to:

  • Incorporate all previously-learned skills from Term I Spanish 4
  • Utilize the future and condition to express probability
  • Utilize direct object and indirect object pronouns to communicate effectively and efficiently in the target language
  • Employ verbs like to “gustar” to express likes, dislikes, interests, etc.
  • Communicate what is going to happen in the “near future”
  • Respond to daily question/answer sessions in the target language
  • Choose ser/estar to describe feelings, opinions, descriptions, etc.
  • Detail and a give a general overview on the origins of the Spanish language and its historical/cultural influences
  • Discuss/compare/contrast the role of religion in Spanish-speaking nations with other countries

By the end of Term III students should be able to demonstrate the ability to:

  • Incorporate all previously-learned skills from Term I/II Spanish 4
  • Narrate actions beginning in the past by using the (4) perfects tenses and the idiomatic expression “acabar de”.
  • Describe acts in progressive (in all tenses)
  • Utilize expressions with “hace” to describe duration of time and weather
  • Solicit information utilizing interrogative words while forming questions
  • Discuss ownership using possessive adjectives and pronouns
  • Discuss/compare/contrast the role of family (both traditional and non-traditional) in Spanish-speaking nations with other countries
  • Identify, analyze, and discuss the cultural nuances of various Hispanic nations and the role of age and gender
  • Form the present subjunctive
  • Employ regional colloquial phrases to initiate, organize, and end a conversation in order to promote communicate in the target language

By the end of Term IV students should be able to demonstrate the ability to:

  • Incorporate all previously-learned skills from Term I/II/III Spanish 4
  • Form the present perfect subjunctive
  • Compare and contrast the present and present perfect subjunctive and utilize them in proper context with:

noun clauses
verbs of volition
expressions of doubt

  • Utilize all of the subjunctive and indicative tenses appropriately in accordance with the sequence of tense rule
  • Identify and characterize written selections by mood and tense
  • Utilize the diminutive and superlative forms for emphasis and identification
  • Employ intermediate colloquial phrases to engage and sustain a meaningful conversation in order to effectively communicate in the target language
