To be or not to be…

In Spanish, there are two verbs that mean “to be” – SER and ESTAR.  Each verb has distinct uses but their proper application can often be confusing.  In Spanish I, we are currently focusing on the verb ESTAR and its use with prepositions of location.  In order to practice ESTAR in context, students  are utilizing Book Creator and Notability to design and create some wonderful “Where is__________”  audio children’s books.   Check out a few below!

Term I – Oral Assessments

wherethemagichappens How true is this?  We all like to stay in our “comfort zone” and stick to what we know we are “good at” but is that really the best way to approach learning?  I find students are very confident in writing and reading in the target language but when it comes to speaking and listening comprehension, well, students aren’t so ready to take risks.  As a result, we are focusing our efforts on oral proficiency and skills-based assessments in Spanish I. Each term, students will work on mastering new grammar and content concepts with a focus on building real-life speaking and comprehension skills in authentic situations.

In Spanish I, all students can execute (ask and answer) the following (20) questions (and several variations of these questions):

  1. ¿Cómo te llamas? – What is your name?
  2. ¿Cómo escribes tu nombre en español? – How do you spell your name in Spanish?
  3. ¿Cómo escribes tu apellido en español? – How do you spell your last name in Spanish?
  4. ¿Cuál es tu número de teléfono? – What is your phone number?
  5. ¿De dónde eres? – Where are you from?
  6. ¿Cómo estás? – How are you?
  7. ¿Cuántos años tienes? – How old are you?
  8. ¿Qué día es hoy? – What day is today?
  9. ¿Cuál es la fecha hoy? – What is the date today?
  10. ¿Qué día fue ayer? – What day was yesterday?
  11. ¿Qué día es mañana? – What day is tomorrow?
  12. ¿Cuándo es tu cumpleaños? – When is your birthday
  13. ¿Qué hora es? – What time is it?
  14. ¿A qué hora es tu clase favorita hoy? – At what time is your favorite class?
  15. ¿Cuántos días hay en una semana? – How many days are there in a week?
  16. ¿Cuántos meses hay en un año? – How many months are there in a year?
  17. ¿Cuántas estaciones hay en un año? – How many seasons are there in a year?
  18. ¿Cuál es tu estación favorita? – What is your favorite season?
  19. ¿Cómo escribes _________________ en español?  (Spell a random Word in Spanish) – How do you spell ___________ in Spanish?
  20. ¿Cuántos estudiantes hay en esta clase? – How many students are there in this class?

Students have done a great job working in the target language!  I can’t wait to see what Term 2 brings!

Un espectáculo de marionetas

puppetsStudents in Spanish 1 just learned “saludos y despedidas” (greetings and goodbyes) and various other fun conversation starters. They can now discuss and spell their first and last names as well as inquire about age, origin, and feelings.

Creamos etiquetas de Twitter!
